What is Picamilon?

Picamilon is a combination of GABA and niacin. GABA is the key inhibitory neurotransmitter that is responsible for calming effects in the brain. Niacin, also known as Vitamin B3 or Nicotinic Acid, is an organic compound that belongs to the B-Complex family. Added together they form a unique combination that is capable of providing benefits that would not be possible if these compounds were used separately.

The positive effects of Picamilon come from its effects on blood circulation. An improved blood circulation equals higher levels of oxygen and vital nutrients. Consequently, there is a better energy metabolism, which results in enhanced cognitive functions. Most users report improved learning capacity and memory, particularly the ability to retain information within their working memory. Picamilon also provides positive effects on individual’s concentration, motivation and attention span.

The key mechanism through which Picamilon works is its ability to uplift GABA neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Over-excited neural activity in the brain is regulated by GABA. However, GABA can only penetrate the blood-brain barrier when combined with niacin. By itself GABA is not effective as it is unable to access the brain. That is why products that contain just GABA do not work. By increasing the levels of GABA, Picamilon leads to a relaxed state of mind and reduces stress. Interestingly, despite this effect, Picamilon does not make you sedated. Picamilon is often used by people who suffer from mood disturbance (irritability), emotional instability and high levels of anxiety.

Picamilon is still a relatively unknown nootropic. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that is a good mood regulator with a positive effect on cognition.

Key benefits:

  • Reduces emotional stress
  • Stress reliever
  • Anti-anxiety effect
  • Mood stabiliser
  • Improves working capacity
  • Increased mental alertness

Recommended dosage:

The recommended daily dosage is between 50 -300 mg. The effects usually last for 2 to 4 hours, so it is recommended to split the daily dosage into three equal administrations. Picamilon is a morning-evening type of nootropic that can be taken at any point throughout the day. In addition, it can be used on an empty stomach. Lower doses (i.e., 50 mg) are used for tranquilising and mood stabilising effects, whereas higher doses (i.e. 300 mg) provide a stimulatory effect for increased mental energy and endurance. After prolonged use (i.e., several weeks of daily usage) Picamilon’s effects become cumulative and more evident. The above dosages should be reduced when taken with other nootropics as Picamilon is believed to be synergistic.

Mechanisms of action:

Picamilon works by rapidly crossing the blood-brain barrier where it is split into its two main components - GABA and niacin. GABA is then free to bind to receptors and produce an anxiolytic effect. Niacin decreases cerebral blood vessels tone and causes vasodilation which increases blood flow and circulation in the brain. With an increase in blood flow more nutrients (e.g. glucose) and oxygen can enter the brain. A combined action of these two nutrients improves the functional state of the brain. Picamilon usually starts to work within an hour and its effects last between 2-4 hours.

Picamilon side effects:

Based on current evidence and studies that were mainly carried out in Russia, Picamilon is considered to be a safe compound with low toxicity and no allergenic or carcinogenic properties. In comparison to other anxiolytic compounds, Picamilon is reported to develop fewer problems related to withdrawal, tolerance and potential addiction. Occasionally reported side effects are headaches, nausea and dizziness. However, it is believed that these side effects can be prevented by not exceeding the recommended daily dosage. With that said, due to the lack of more scientific data, one should never completely discard the possibility of those side effect occurring. Another important point to consider before starting to Picamilon is its reaction with other medications. Picamilon is a weak monoamine oxidase (MAO)inhibitor. It inhibits enzymes that break down neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. Even though Picamilon is a weak MAO inhibitor it should not be used with other anti-depressants that fall into this category. If you have any concerns about Picamilon, you should discuss them with a health professional.
