Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is the acetylated form of L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine is an amino acid naturally present in the body which can also be consumed through food. It is directly involved in a number of different processes, such energy metabolism and mitochondrial protection. As it affects energy metabolism, specifically fatty acids transport to mitochondria, it is often found in weight loss products.
ALCAR is a modified version of L-Carnitine with similar metabolic benefits. In comparison to L-Carnitine, ALCAR has one major advantage as it improves cognitive functions, such as the ability to learn. This is attributed to ALCAR’s special qualities, particularly with regards to the central nervous system (CNS,) and its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.
The synthesis of ALCAR naturally decreases with age. By being able to cross the blood-brain barrier it therefore reduces the neurological decline and aging effect on the brain health. When compared to other forms of L-Carnitine, ALCAR has been proven to have greater positive effects on mental fatigue and attention concentration in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). In addition, ALCAR can enhance alertness and prevent brain deterioration during stressful periods. Several studies demonstrated that ALCAR positively affects brain metabolism after energetic stresses.
ALCAR has been shown to increase the synthesis of Acetylcholine, which is an essential neurotransmitter for brain health. Acetylcholine is one of the neurotransmitters that is absolutely crucial for our thought processes and functions associated with memory. Furthermore, ALCAR enhances the neurotrophic activity of nerve growth factor (NGF).
Therefore, it can protect, strengthen and repair the brain neurons. Neuroprotective benefits of ALCAR are currently being researched in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The antioxidant properties of ALCAR can reduce the amount of waste products in the brain.
Overall, ALCAR is a natural substance with cholinergic and serotonergic effects.
ALCAR is absorbed in the gut via the OCTN2 transporter. Once it reaches the brain, it is broken down into Acetyl- CoA which binds to choline to form Acetylcholine.
The recommended daily dosage is between 500 -3000 mg, taken in two or three equal dosages a day. For a good mental health you should take between 500 mg to 2 g per day. Higher doses (1.5 g to 3 g per day) should be taken to support the nervous system. ALCAR has a higher bioavailability compared to L-Carnitine. Although there is a high individual variability, the effect of ALCAR on cognitive functions is observed after 20 minutes.
ALCAR is a well-tolerated compound. It is considered to be very safe. However, some mild effects, such as headaches, nausea and stomach discomfort may occur. Due to its effects on the CNS it may also have a stimulating effect in some people.
