Alpha GPC is a choline-derived compound that is closely related to the B-complex vitamins. Choline is a very important micronutrient important for health as it is involved in functional and structural roles in cells. Choline is found in a variety of foods (e.g. pork chop, eggs, fish, chicken breasts, spinach etc.) and is consumed in the form of phosphatidylcholine. However the concentrations in food sources are relatively low, thus dietary intake of choline is often increased via products, such as Alpha GPC.
Choline is also a building block of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a very important neurotransmitter involved in a number of cognitive processes, including learning, memory and focus. Therefore, sufficient levels of free choline in the blood are required to maintain acetylcholine production. Decreased levels of acetylcholine may have a negative influence on the cognitive function.
Alpha GPC can increase the brain concentrations of choline. Alpha GPC is transported to the brain very quickly and it is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier at a high rate. This makes it the most effective cholinergic. Several clinical studies demonstrated the benefits of Alpha GPC in patients with cognitive dysfunctions. Therefore, Alpha GPC may reduce a decrease in cholinergic activity that occurs due to aging.
Alpha GPC seems to enhance acetylcholine levels by increasing the number of neurotransmitter precursors. Alpha GPC is absorbed into the blood stream, transported to the brain where it crosses the blood-brain barrier. Alpha GPC may also activate protein kinase C in the hippocampus. Alpha GPC increases the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the cerebellum and frontal cortex.
The recommended dosage is between 300 - 600 mg taken 2 times per day. As you become more used to taking Alpha GPC and its effects, the daily dosage can be increased to 800 – 1000 mg per day. Alpha GPC is water soluble and appears to be effective over the course of 24 hours, however a peak concentration is normally observed 1-3 hours post ingestion. You should not take Alpha GPC late at night as some users report stimulatory effects.
Alpha GPC is regarded as safe if taken at the recommended dosage. However, cognitive stimulation is sometimes reported as a side effect. Typical side effects from overdosing include headaches and restlessness. You can prevent these side effects by lowering the daily dosage.
Following oral ingestion Alpha GPC increases plasma choline levels. Choline is then used by the brain tissue. For example, after taking 1000 mg of oral Alpha GPC there was an increase of serum choline concentrations from 8.1 mmol/L to 12.1 mmol/L in young healthy male subjects. The neural and blood concentrations are very similar, which makes Alpha GPC a highly effective nootropic.
