Huperzine A (aka selagine) is a natural alkaloid that is extracted from the herbs of the Huperziceae family. Currently, Huperzine A is one of the most popular memory-enhancing products on the market. Huperzine A has been used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other forms of neurological impairments. However, positive results are also observed in individuals without any mental impairments. For example, one experiment in healthy teenagers found that Huperzine A was very effective in increasing memory function.
Due to its effectiveness and concentration, only small dosages of Huperzine A are required (see below). More recently, Huperzine A has been used in a number of popular nootropic formulas.
Huperzine A works by inhibiting an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, which is a very important neurotransmitter involved in a number of cognitive processes, including learning, memory and focus. Low levels of acetylcholine are often associated with cognitive decline and impairment. In addition to memory loss prevention, Huperzine A has been shown to improve mental functions and concentration.
Like Alpha GPC it belongs to the cholinergic family. However, it is often a preferred choice by nootropics users as it has less cholinergic related side effects. In addition, Huperzine A has neuroprotective properties against glutamate toxicity. Therefore, Huperzine A may also protect from the brain tissue damage.
After oral ingestion it appears in the blood in around 15 minutes and peaks at around 70 minutes post-ingestion. Compare to some other nootropics this is relatively quick. Furthermore, its half-life appears to be long too. Huperzine A is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor which helps to regulate acetylcholine levels in the brain. Low levels of acetylcholine are often associated with a cognitive decline.
The recommended daily dosage is between 50 – 200 mcg taken in 2 equal doses. Huperzine A is water soluble so it does not have to be ingested with a meal. Also, it is recommended to take Huperzine A on a cycle basis, e.g. two weeks followed by a break.
Appropriate use should not have any adverse side effects. Animal and human studies do not show any serious side-effects if taken at the recommended dosages. However, some reported side effects include nausea, sweating, dizziness, thirst and restlessness.
