Vincamine is a natural nootropic which is found in the Periwinkle plant (Vinca Minor). It was first extracted in 1955 and has since been used for therapeutic effects to treat different conditions related to insufficient oxygen supply in the brain. It works as a peripheral vasodilator of blood vessels.
By increasing the cerebral blood flow Vincamine is able to improve the metabolism of essential nutrients and oxygen utilisation in the brain. As a result, Vincamine users report increased levels of mental energy, higher alertness and mental state as well as improved ability to think clearly.
In addition, Vincamine is effective in activating neurons in the cerebral cortex area responsible for thinking and planning. This is very important when trying to offset a normal age-related cognitive decline. A number of clinical studies have found promising results in treating different cognitive impairments by using Vincamine.
As a herbal-based dietary product Vincamine has a number of beneficial effects associated with cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection.
As with other nootropics, the precise mechanisms of action are still unknown. There is an ongoing research to explain the mechanistic basis of Vincamine effectiveness. However, what is currently known is that as a strong peripheral vasodilator Vincamine relaxes the smooth muscle cells within the walls of blood vessels. This increases the blood flow to the brain which subsequently improves the supply of glucose, oxygen and other important nutrients. Also, Vincamine activates the locus coeruleus (LC), which an area in the brain responsible for various physiological processes. These include stress, attention and arousal. The LC is a wakefulness-promoting centre that regulates the levels of alertness. Therefore, when Vincamine is ingested it affects the LC which results in a higher alertness.
The recommended dosage is 30 mg taken twice a day. However, if you have never taken nootropics before, it is recommended that you start with just a single dose. Once you become more familiar with its effects, you can start increasing the dosage and change it based on your individual needs.
Vincamine has extremely low toxicity and no adverse side effects. However, it is important to follow the recommended dosages as it may sometimes cause gastrointestinal distress. This can be prevented by reducing the dosage and it disappears when usage is stopped.
