Phosphatidylserine (PS) is an amino acid derivative which is highly prevalent in human cells. It is a major component of the cell membrane. In other words, it is a building block nutrient for healthy, alive and fully functional cells. This includes the neural tissue.
PS plays two major roles in the brain. Firstly, it revitalises brain cell membranes and secondly, it regulates the release of neurotrasnmitters. PS has been shown to improve a number of brain functions that tend to decline with age. This may be explained by the fact that natural production of PS decreases during mid-life. For example, PS has a positive effect on memory, mood and cognition in older individuals. Therefore, it may be very effective in reducing the risk of dementia, cognitive dysfunction and decline in mental function. Preliminary results suggest that PS may even be able to restorative effects following head injuries and substance abuse. In terms of therapeutic benefits, PS has been used to treat ADD and ADHD.
By strengthening cell membranes, PS is also able to improve memory, increase attention span and enhance mood during mental stress. Interestingly, PS may have an ergogenic effect in athletes by increasing recovery, preventing muscle soreness and reducing cortisol (‘stress hormone’) concentrations in response to training.
PS is efficiently absorbed after oral consumption. PS is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. Once in the brain, PS binds to neurotransmitters and helps to metabolise glucose more efficiently. This increases cell excitability and communication. PS is also a regulatory mechanism behind the release of acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Additionally, some evidence suggest that PC is involved in the production of motivation neurotransmitter. PS is a fat-soluble phospholipid, which means it should be consumed with a meal.
The recommended daily dosage is between 300 - 600 mg. Phosphatidylserine is derived from soy lecithin.
PS is generally regarded as safe when used at the recommended dosages. Several studies have found no adverse side effects following PS use. Even though side effects are rare, some users may experience mild gastrointestinal distress.
