Oxiracetam is a nootropic that belongs to the racetam group. It is similar to the original racetam, but with a slightly different molecular structure. Specifically, Oxiracetam has an added hydroxyl group which results in a greater potency. Oxiracetam, just like other racetams, is not naturally found in food sources. However, it can be bought online as a compound which appears to be effective at lower dosage than its precursor.
Oxiracetam provides a number of benefits. It has been described as a ‘vigilance enhancing compound with some effects on memory’, while reviewers also report a stimulating effect. Oxiracetam has been demonstrated to have a positive effect on the short- and long-term memories. Users report the ability to remember the smallest and even insignificant details following Oxiracetam use. This makes it a good study aid and should be used during times when memory is particularly important, e.g. exam revision.Due to its effectiveness,Oxiracetam is also often called a booster of intelligence with unique effects on memory capacity.
In addition to enhancing memory capacity, Oxiracetam also leads to a higher alertness and mental energy levels. This may be particularly improvement during stressful periods.A few human studies have showed a reduced rate of cognitive decline due to aging process and cognitive diseases. More research in this area is required though.
The recommended daily dosage is between 1200-2000 mg taken in 2 to 3 even doses. For a maximal result it should be taken approximately one hour prior to a learning activity. The effects of Oxiracetam normally last up to 6 hours. Oxiracetam is water soluble and does not necessarily have to be consumed with a meal. Unlike many nootropic powders, Oxiracetam is actually known for its sweet taste and palatability.
Oxiracetam is mostly praised for its ability to enhance long-term memory formation. It achieves that by increasing the levels of glutamate and D-Aspartic Acid neurotransmitters. They are two compounds metabolised by the brain in the hippocampus area. Specifically, D-Aspartic Acid is responsible for the long term memory formation. Therefore, when Oxiracetam is used the brain can store memories quicker and more efficiently. In addition, short-term memories are also formed more efficiently. This is down to a slight increase of acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Oxiracetam can also boost the cholinergic function.
Much like other nootropics in the racetam family, Oxiracetam has very few side effects. Even at higher doses, Oxiracetam is well-tolerated. Prolonged use does not seem to lead to any adverse side effects either. Due to its stimulatory effects, some people may find it difficult to fall asleep. Interestingly, the actual quality of sleep is unaffected. As observed with other racetams, one of the reported side effects is headache. This can be prevented by combining with Choline Bitartrate or Alpha GPC.
