Oxiracetam is one of the first nootropics from the racetam family. It is a derivative of the original racetam with an added hydroxyl group and a greater potency. Like other racetams, oxiracetam is not naturally found in food sources.
Oxiracetam offers a fairly large number of benefits. Oxiracetam is famous for its ability to facilitate learning by enhancing memory. Oxiracetam has been shown to positively affect the short- and long-term memories. Users appear to remember the smallest and even insignificant details following Oxiracetam use. Therefore, it is a goodstudy aid and should be used during times when memory is particularly important, e.g. exam revision. Due to its effectiveness, Oxiracetam is often called a booster of intelligence that expands memory capacity.
In addition to noticeable improvements in the memory capacity, Oxiracetam also increases the levels of mental energy and alertness. This may lead you to putting much less effort to regular activities, such as studying and working.
A few human studies showed a reduced rate of cognitive decline due to aging process as well as cognitive diseases. In terms of cognitive decline prevention it is slightly more potent than the original racetam.
Exact mechanisms of action are still unknown but it works by activating AMPA receptors in the brain. Oxiracetam also increases the release of important neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, acetylcholine and D-Aspartic Acid from activated neurons. Glutamate and D-Aspartic Acid are two compounds metabolized by the brain’s hippocampus area. D-Aspartic Acid is responsible for the long-term memory formation.
The recommended daily dosage is between 1200-2000 mg taken in 2 to 3 even doses. For a maximal result it should be taken approximately one hour prior to a learning activity. The effects of Oxiracetam normally last up to 6 hours. Oxiracetam is water soluble and does not necessarily have to be consumed with a meal.
It is a relatively safe nootropic with no significant side-effects reported in human studies. Oxiracetam seems to be well tolerated even if taken at high doses. However, Oxiracetam has mild psychostimulatory effects and may cause sleep disturbances. As observed with other racetams, one of the reported side effects is headache. This can be prevented by using with Choline Bitartrate or Alpha GPC.
